最近幾季風波不斷的「神經射手」J.R. Smith，新球季目標是：在球隊裡當領袖人物。

請克制你的笑聲，Smith可是相當認真：「我們加入很多年輕球員，一些比較資深的球員，最近兩季走了大半，所以我要當領袖，幫助年輕球員。」

姑且不論尼克隊的領袖是不是Carmelo Anthony，近幾季Smith惹出不少麻煩，雖然獲選2012-13球季最佳第六人，但簽了新約之後，表現不如預期，跟球隊關係一度緊張。這樣的球員，如何擔任球隊領袖？難道要教新進弟兄鬆開對方鞋帶？

不過Smith已經擬定「領袖計畫」：「我會實際去做，而不是出一張嘴。以前Rasheed Wallace、Jason Kidd也是這樣，所以那就是我要做的。」

上個球季Smith平均得分從18.1下降到14.5，影響尼克戰績，只拿到37勝，沒能打進季後賽。如果Smith真的變成「領袖人物」，當然能提升尼克隊晉級機會。

「當然，我們應該要打進季後賽，」Smith說，「上季就應該要進的，至於新球季，絕對會晉級的。」
